ANAACP and Partners to Hold News Conference Condemning Legislator’s Anti-democratic Attack on Our State

Alamance NAACP to hold a press conference condemning the extremists in our NC General Assembly, including our own Alamance County state representatives, and their desperate, anti-democratic attacks on the will of the people and the governing institutions of our state.

WHO:  The Alamance Branch of the NAACP and local partners

WHAT:  Press Conference to Condemn the recent Special Session of the NCGA

WHEN: Tuesday, December 20, 2016 – 1:00 pm Press Conference

WHERE: Mayco Bigelow Community Center, 849 Sharpe Rd, Burlington, NC 27217

Burlington, NC – On Tuesday, December 20, 2016, the Alamance NAACP and partners will hold a press conference at the Mayco Bigelow Community Center to hold the governor and extremists in the NCGA, including our own Alamance County state representatives, responsible for their ongoing, desperate, anti-democratic attacks on the voters of our state. To protect themselves from the electoral consequences of their extremist legislative agenda, they have attempted to maintain control of state government through unconstitutionally gerrymandered representative districts and an arsenal of voting restrictions targeting minority, poor, young and elderly voters.

Despite their cynical efforts to insulate themselves from the will of the people and despite the judicial rejection of their unconstitutional election laws and representative districts, the extremists in the General Assembly still suffered the electoral defeat of their gubernatorial ally in the 2016 elections. Once again, their reaction has been shameful.

After weeks of unproven allegations of voter fraud meant to undermine state elections, the defeated governor and his extremists allies in the General Assembly convened an unprecedented Special Session of the state legislature. In an attempt to avoid accountability for the legislative abuses that have so damaged our state, the extremists again sought to circumvent the will of the people. They stripped away many of the newly elected governor’s executive powers in a rushed special session without meaningful input from dissenting legislators or the public. And still not satisfied, they went on to pass laws to intentionally create dysfunction and gridlock in our state and county board of elections. We will not allow these abuses to go unrecognized. The Alamance NAACP and our local partners will continue to fight for the dignity of our state, its governing institutions and our democracy.
